Book Settings

Accessing Book Settings

  1. Open the book you want to configure
  2. Click Book Settings (gear icon) in the header
  3. Or right-click the book in the Books view and select Settings

Publication Information

Basic Details

Field Description
Title Your book's title
Subtitle Optional subtitle
Author Author name (defaults to project author)
Description Book description or blurb (used in exports)

Identifiers

Field Description
ISBN (Print) 13-digit ISBN for print edition
ISBN (Ebook) 13-digit ISBN for ebook edition
ASIN Amazon Standard Identification Number

ISBNs are optional but recommended for distribution. Enter the full 13-digit number without hyphens.

Publisher Information

Field Description
Publisher Publisher name
Imprint Publishing imprint (if applicable)
Copyright Copyright notice text

Writing Goals

Set word count goals to track your progress.

Book Goal

  1. In Book Settings, find the Goals section
  2. Enter your target word count for the complete book
  3. The progress bar shows your current progress

Due Date

  1. Click Set Due Date
  2. Select a completion date
  3. Verkilo calculates words per day needed to meet your goal

The goal and due date appear in the book header and analytics.

Tracking Progress

  • Current words: Counted from all non-trashed sections
  • Goal progress: Percentage toward your target
  • Daily target: If you set a due date, words per day to finish on time

Cover Image

Set a cover image that appears in the Books view and can be included in exports.

Setting a Cover Image

  1. In Book Settings, find the Cover section
  2. Click Upload Cover or drag and drop an image
  3. Supported formats: JPG, PNG
  4. Recommended size: 1600 × 2560 pixels (Amazon's recommendation)

Cover Image Uses

  • Books view: Thumbnail display
  • EPUB export: Front cover image
  • Book details: Visual identification

Changing the Cover

  1. Click on the existing cover image
  2. Select a new image
  3. The old image is replaced

Removing the Cover

  1. Hover over the cover image
  2. Click the remove/delete icon
  3. The cover returns to the default placeholder

Interior Template

Assign an interior design template to your book for PDF export.

Setting an Interior Template

  1. In Book Settings, find the Interior section
  2. Click Select Template
  3. Choose from available templates (built-in or custom)
  4. The template is assigned to this book

What the Template Controls

The interior template determines:
- Trim size and margins
- Fonts and typography
- Chapter styling
- Scene break appearance
- Drop caps and ornaments

Editing the Assigned Template

  1. Click Edit Interior to open the Interior Designer
  2. Make adjustments
  3. Changes save to this book's interior design

Bundle Association

Associate your book with a bundle (series or collection).

Adding to a Bundle

  1. In Book Settings, find the Bundle section
  2. Click Select Bundle or the dropdown
  3. Choose an existing bundle or create a new one
  4. The book is now part of that bundle

Series Order

When a book belongs to a bundle:
1. Set the Series Number to indicate position (e.g., 1, 2, 3)
2. This number appears in exports and can affect sort order

Removing from a Bundle

  1. Click the X or Remove next to the bundle name
  2. The book is disassociated but not deleted

Compile Settings

Configure how sections are included in exports.

Default Compile Target

Set which exports a new section is included in by default:

Target Included In
All EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML, Markdown
Ebook EPUB, HTML, Markdown only
Print PDF, DOCX only
None Excluded from all exports

Individual sections can override this default.

Front Matter / Back Matter

Designate sections as front matter (before main content) or back matter (after main content):
1. Right-click a section in the binder
2. Select Set as Front Matter or Set as Back Matter
3. These sections appear in appropriate positions in exports


Best Practices

  1. Set ISBNs early - Add ISBNs before your first export to ensure metadata is consistent

  2. Set realistic goals - A too-ambitious goal can be discouraging; adjust as you learn your pace

  3. Update as you go - Keep publication information current during the writing process

  4. Use bundles for series - Group related books for consistent metadata and easier management

  5. Choose templates before final export - Set your interior template and make adjustments before exporting for publication
