What is a Section?
A section represents a unit of your story:
- A chapter
- A scene within a chapter
- Front matter (dedication, acknowledgments)
- Back matter (author bio, other books)
Sections can be nested to create a hierarchical structure.
Creating Sections
From the Binder
- Click Add Section at the bottom of the binder
- Enter a title
- Click Create
Using Keyboard Shortcut
Press Cmd/Ctrl+N to create a new section.
From the Context Menu
Right-click in the binder and select Add New Section.
Section Structure
Flat Structure
Sections appear as a simple list:
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Hierarchical Structure
Nest scenes within chapters:
Chapter 1
└── Scene 1
└── Scene 2
Chapter 2
└── Scene 1
To nest a section:
1. Drag the section onto another section
2. It becomes a child of that section
Reordering Sections
Drag sections in the binder to reorder:
1. Click and hold a section
2. Drag to the desired position
3. Drop to place
A blue indicator shows where the section will be placed.
Renaming Sections
- In the editor: Click the title at the top and edit
- In the binder: Double-click the section name
Section Properties
Compile Target
Control whether a section appears in exports:
- All - Include in all export formats
- Ebook - Only include in EPUB exports
- Print - Only include in DOCX/PDF exports
- Exclude - Never include in exports
Set via the context menu: Right-click > Compile In
Matter Type
Sections are organized into matter groups:
- Front Matter - Title page, dedication, etc.
- Main Matter - Your story content
- Back Matter - Author bio, other books, etc.
Deleting Sections
- Right-click the section in the binder
- Select Trash
- The section moves to Archives
Trashed sections can be restored from the Archives view.
Merging Sections
Combine two adjacent sections:
1. Right-click the first section
2. Select Merge with Next
3. Content from the next section appends to the current one
4. The second section is removed
Note: This action cannot be undone. Create a snapshot first if needed.
Moving Sections Between Books
- Right-click the section
- Select Move to > [Book Name]
- The section transfers to the selected book
Section Associations
Link story elements to sections:
Characters
- Open the Section Details panel
- Click Add Character
- Select or create a character
- The character is now associated with this section
Locations
- Open the Section Details panel
- Click Add Location
- Select or create a location
- The location is now associated with this section
These associations help track where characters and locations appear in your story.
POV Character
Assign a point-of-view character to each section:
1. Open the Section Details panel
2. In the POV section, select a character
3. The POV character displays in the editor footer
This helps track whose perspective each scene uses.
Tips for Section Management
- Use descriptive titles -
Chapter 3
is less useful thanThe Escape
- Nest strategically - Group related scenes under chapter headings
- Use matter groups - Organize front/back matter separately
- Review with Verkado - Select multiple sections to check narrative flow
- Track POV - Maintain consistency in point of view
