Theme Modes
Verkilo offers three theme modes:
Light Mode
- Light background with dark text
- Best for well-lit environments
- Reduces eye strain in bright rooms
Dark Mode
- Dark background with light text
- Reduces eye strain in low light
- Better for evening/night writing
System Default
- Automatically matches your operating system
- Changes when your OS theme changes
- Best for consistent experience with other apps
Changing Theme Mode
On macOS
- Click Verkilo in the menu bar
- Select Appearance
- Choose Light, Dark, or System Default
On Windows/Linux
- Click View in the menu bar
- Select Appearance
- Choose your preferred mode
Accent Colors
Customize the brand/accent color used throughout the app.
Available Colors
- Red
- Pink
- Purple
- Violet
- Blue (default)
- Aqua
- Green
- Yellow
Where Accent Colors Appear
- Active navigation items
- Selected sections in binder
- Buttons and interactive elements
- Progress indicators
- Focus rings
Changing Accent Color
- Open Preferences or Settings
- Navigate to Appearance
- Select your preferred accent color
- Changes apply immediately
Theme and Editor
The editor respects your theme choice:
- Background adapts to light/dark
- Text color adjusts for contrast
- Syntax highlighting (if applicable) adjusts
- Images display the same in both themes
Editor-Specific Settings
Editor appearance settings (fonts, size) are separate from theme:
- Change fonts in the Editor Settings panel
- Theme affects colors, not typography
- Both work together for your ideal writing environment
Recommendations
For Long Writing Sessions
- Dark mode at night to reduce eye strain
- Light mode during day for clarity
- System for automatic transitions
For Focus
- Choose a subdued accent color (blue, purple)
- Bright colors (yellow, green) can be distracting
For Accessibility
- Ensure sufficient contrast with your display
- Dark mode may be easier on some vision conditions
- Test both modes to find what works best for you
Theme Persistence
Your theme preferences are saved:
- Theme mode persists between sessions
- Accent color persists between sessions
- Settings are stored locally
