Hey, it’s Ben again. I want to be plain about where Verkilo stands on AI, because a lot of writing tools are being loud about the opposite of what I believe.

I think a novel should be written by a novelist. Not prompted into existence, not “generated with,” not stitched together from a model’s guess at what a sentence should sound like. Written. By a person. That isn’t nostalgia. It’s the part that makes a book worth reading, and it’s the part that makes it yours.

So let me tell you exactly what Verkilo does and doesn’t do.

There is no AI inside Verkilo

Verkilo doesn’t ship an assistant. There’s no “generate chapter” button, no autocomplete finishing your sentences, no model quietly rewriting you in the background. Open the app and it’s you and the page. That’s the whole point of it.

And if you never want anything to do with AI? Perfect. Verkilo was a complete writing tool before agents ever entered the picture, and it stays one whether you touch them or not. The Series Bible, the files that live offline on your own machine, the clean exports to EPUB, PDF, and DOCX, the one price with no subscription, none of it depends on AI, and none of it ever will. Leave the door shut and you lose nothing. The book still gets written.

What we do let you do

What Verkilo does is open a door. If you already work with an AI agent, and more and more writers do, Verkilo lets you connect it to your manuscript the way you’d hand a draft to a sharp editor. You bring the agent. You decide what it sees. You stay in control of every word.

And when you point an agent at your work through Verkilo, it’s built for the parts of the job that were always drudgery:

• Continuity. Read across the whole series and catch the eye color that changed in book three, the character who’s suddenly in two places, the timeline that doesn’t add up.
• Line editing. Flag the lazy sentence, the repeated word, the paragraph that sags, so you can fix it. You fix it.
• The Series Bible. Keep characters, locations, keywords, and points of view current as the story grows.

It reads, checks, and suggests. It works on your book. It doesn’t write it.

Why the line is bright, and why it protects you

This isn’t only how I like to work. It’s how you keep what you make.

In early 2025 the U.S. Copyright Office said it clearly: human authorship is the bedrock of copyright. A work generated entirely by AI can’t be copyrighted, and no amount of clever prompting makes you its author. But using AI as a tool to edit and sharpen your own writing doesn’t cost you anything. The Office draws its line at the point where a machine’s contribution stops being trivial and starts being the writing itself.

Verkilo is built to keep you on the safe side of that line by design. A second set of eyes is assistive. A ghostwriter is not. When the words are yours, the copyright is yours, and your name belongs on it without an asterisk.

Yes, this is a side

I know it is. Plenty of tools are racing to write the book for you, and they’re good at making that sound like a gift. I think they’re handing you a manuscript you may not fully own, in exchange for the one part of the work that was worth doing in the first place.
