A real proofreader, on your own computer

Built-in spelling and grammar checking that runs offline — a word processor's, not a browser squiggle.

Most web-based writing apps leave proofreading to your browser — the same red squiggle you get in any text box. Verkilo ships its own checker, the kind you’d expect from a desktop word processor, and it runs entirely on your computer.

Check when you’re ready

Drafting and proofreading are different jobs, so nothing gets flagged until you ask. Right-click and choose “Check Spelling & Grammar”: misspellings get red underlines, grammar issues blue, and a counter in the footer hops you from one problem to the next.

  • Underlines keep up as you edit, and clear when you’re done
  • Prefer constant checking? Turn on “Check While Typing” and it never stops

Fix from the right-click menu

Right-click any underline and the suggestions sit at the top of the menu, next to “Ignore” and “Add to Dictionary” — the same muscle memory as every word processor you’ve used.

Nothing leaves your machine. The checker is a deterministic rule engine that works completely offline: no account, no cloud, no AI, and your manuscript stays where it is.

A dictionary that knows your story

An ordinary spellchecker flags every invented name in a fantasy novel. Verkilo already knows yours: character and location names from your Series Bible are recognized automatically, and anything else goes in your personal dictionary once.

  • Six English dialects: American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and Indian
  • Hundreds of rules you can toggle one by one
  • Style rules that fight fiction prose — sentence-length nags and the like — are off by default

Common questions

Does my manuscript get sent anywhere for checking?

No. The checker runs entirely on your computer — no account, no network connection, no cloud service. It works the same with your internet turned off.

Is this an AI feature?

No. It’s a deterministic rule engine: the same text always gets the same result, and it works with every AI feature in Verkilo switched off.

What languages does it support?

English only for now, in American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and Indian dialects.

Will it complain about my style?

It’s a proofreader — misspellings, doubled words, agreement, punctuation — not a style coach. The rules that tend to fight fiction prose are off by default, and every rule can be toggled individually.
